A Chapter of Local History Some Might Want Forgotten

Contrary to a popular belief held by some, small rural communities aren't utopias.

Take Wimer, for example.

On the surface, it does look like an idyllic wilderness with quaint houses and jovial folks.

Reality check: Most days, it's the Florida of Southern Oregon.

It's an unincorporated community in the Evans Valley area, north of Rogue River. For over the last one hundred plus years, Wimer has attracted a wide variety of people: Lumberjacks, prospectors and settlers to out of state retirees, cannabis farmers, hippies, sovereign citizens and oh so many others. The local community social media platforms are filled with people complaining about speeding and tailgating or upset about gunshots and tannerite devices being set off.

And, you'll find people online vigorously supporting those aforementioned activities.

Wimer has problems with drugs. Crime. Child and spousal abuse. Murder.

Especially murder.

Especially the Pig Farm Killer AKA Susan Monica.

In January 2014, Wimer residents and those in nearby Rogue River were shocked to discover that one of their own had some grisly secrets. That's when Susan Monica, then 65, an eccentric woman who sometimes kept to herself and was rumored of having a volatile temper, was arrested for double homicide. According to information from the Dept. of Veterans Affairs, was Monica was born on July 8, 1948 as Steven Buchanan and enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War.

Following an honorable discharge, she began living as a woman, calling herself Susan Monica. She would eventually leave California, moving to the Wimer area.

According to Jackson Co. Sheriff's Office (JCSO) Det. Julie Denney, Monica's arrest came after deputies discovered human remains on her 20-acre ranch located at 9184 West Evans Creek Road. Initially, Monica was arrested earlier that day, Jan. 10, for theft and identity theft.

That all changed after the deputies' discovery at her ranch.

Denney stated that on Jan. 1, the family of Robert Haney contacted the JCSO to file a missing person's report. Haney's family were concerned for some time: They hadn't seen or heard from Haney for a number of months. Denney said that in such cases, any bank or special accounts in the person's name are checked.

In this case, it was Haney's Oregon Trail EBT card. Detectives found that it was still active, albeit in Monica's possession. While she was questioned, deputies went to the ranch. At some point in their search, Denney said deputies made the grisly discovery: The remains of two human bodies in a pigpen. One of them, Denney told local media, was believed to be Haney's.

“Deputy Medical Examiner Eric Fox is still trying to determine (the corpse's) identity, but, we're fairly confident that the body is Robert Haney.” She added that Haney was allegedly murdered on or about Sept. 9, 2013. The other victim is believed to have been killed on or about Aug. 1, 2012.

Oregon State Police (OSP) criminalists later identified the other victim’s remains as being Stephen Frank Delicino, 59, who lived along the 7000 block of Pleasant Creek Rd. in Wimer. Like Haney, he had family living in the area and despite being missing for nearly two years, no one filed a missing person's report.

JCSO investigators and other law enforcement agencies quickly descended upon Monica's ranch, including the OSP's mobile forensics unit. Even before that happened, the rumors started.

Again, both Wimer and Rogue River are small communities and it didn't take long for gossip to stir up some hysteria. For Bill Fuller, who had been Evans Valley Fire District 6 chief at the time, it was bewildering.

“I've known Susan for some time,” he said. “She did some work for us on the fire station. She did a lot of work for people in the area.”

White Queen Construction. That was Monica's company. She was known for her metalworking and many still say she was very good at it. While in the Navy, she had been trained as a welder. She did a lot of work for people in the area; her 20-acre property was a like a compound, with a barn, outbuildings and a few vehicles. There was a camper trailer on the property -- that's where those who worked for her lived. According to some, she wanted to build an underground home.

"It was going to be like a bunker," one person said.

Monica was two inches shy of six feet tall and often wore overalls, a jacket and a hat. While some described her as being soft-spoken, she could be an imposing figure. She was often bald and it was rumored that it was cancer. During her early court appearances, Monica wore a wig; a stylist reportedly came in to improve her appearance for the trial.

It was a common sight, Monica driving around her beat up pickup, with two men -- her hired help.

She lived in the barn and shared it with the pigs. Her metal shop was located there as well. Someone once described it as "one hell of a mess."

Fuller said that the murder allegations had caught him off guard. “Everyone in Wimer has been talking about it,” he said. “A number of people are shocked. I never felt threatened by her and I know of others who felt that way. Still, the rumors are flying all over the place.”

Some of the rumors were:

• A human skull was found in a pigpen.

• The two dead men were fed to pigs.

• In a fit of anger over money, Monica fired a gun at somebody.

• Monica reportedly shot and killed a roommate's pet dog, then fed it to the pigs.

• Monica was originally a man and had an operation.

• Monica was a drag queen – and that's how her business name, “White Queen,” came about.

• Due to lack of evidence, Monica has been released from jail.

• And, outrageously, that more than 30 Hispanic workers have disappeared over the years, all of them falling victim to Monica and her pigs.

At the time, there were rumors of a serial killer stalking transients across the California border in Siskiyou County. Local Internet detectives claimed Monica was behind them too -- despite the fact Californian authorities denied the serial killer story. And, many claimed the cops would find mass graves, filled with Monica's unfortunate victims.

 “I look at it this way,” Fuller said, “we really don't know what happened out there. We don't know how those men died. I haven't seen the autopsy and I bet a lot of these people behind the rumors haven't seen the autopsy either. And, if they found more bodies – then the charges would have reflected that.”

Fuller said that he doesn't like seeing a person being tried by rumor or public opinion. “Innocent until proven guilty. That's how it's suppose to be,” he said. “That's how I'm looking at it.”

However, he also sees the point of view of the families involved.

“I understand their side, too. Speaking as a parent, if I had a kid involved in something like this,” he said, “I would hope that the police and the courts would do their very best to resolve it. Do I feel sorry for everyone involved? Yeah, I do.”

Fuller said he listened to the rumors but knew that the truth would eventually come out. “One way or another, it'll come out in court,” he said. “It may take months but I feel that the truth will come out. Meantime, people in Wimer want this to go away – I know some of them do. But, I don't think it'll be that easy.”

She pleaded not guilty to a pair of murder charges and first-degree corpse abuse counts during a Jan. 21 televised court appearance. Against the judge’s – and her attorneys’ – wishes, Monica made a statement, in which she asked that someone would donate money to have all of her hogs slaughtered and the meat donated to the Rogue River Community Center.

Monica was known to donate her pigs to local food banks. That rattled many in the area. As Ken Goddard, director of the world's only wildlife forensics lab located in Ashland, Ore., said, "Pigs are like humans. When they eat something, it's broken down into protein. Protein is protein -- we don't have the technology to discern what the protein's source is.

"Besides, pigs eating humans -- well, that's probably the most healthy thing they've ever eaten."

Monica's animals were later euthanized. And, some have said the pigs were in such poor shape that the food banks never used them.

Deputy District Attorney Allan Smith, Jackson County DA's Office, said that Monica's statements made to investigators were supported by the forensic evidence gathered by law enforcement agencies during their search of Monica’s property, which lasted for a number of weeks. Those statements and the forensic evidence, Smith said, were more than enough to find Monica guilty of murder. He added that both victims were shot in the head. She was charged with:

        

• Count One – Murder of another human being committed on or about Aug. 1, 2012.

• Count Two – Murder of another human being committed on or about Sept. 9, 2013.

• Count Three – Abuse of a Corpse in the First Degree by mutilating or dismembering a corpse, committed on or about Aug. 1, 2012.

• Count Four – Abuse of a Corpse in the First Degree by mutilating or dismembering a corpse, committed on or about Sept. 9, 2013.

• Count Five – Identity Theft by unlawfully possessing, with the intent to deceive or defraud, the personal identification of Robert Haney committed on or about Sept. 9, 2013.  

Monica was found guilty on all counts on April 21, 2015. The trial lasted six days and the jury's deliberation lasted only an hour. The trial was reported on not only by local and regional media outlets, but even Great Britain's Daily Mail covered it, using a Google Earth map of Monica's ranch property.

During the trial, in between emotional outbursts from Monica, she cross-examined witnesses including Henderson. Christine Herbert was her attorney and Monica clashed with her a number of times.

"That was a mistake," Smith said. "I'll never allow that to happen again."

Facts that came out included:

• Monica did shoot Stephen Delicino, 59, in August 2012 and Robert Haney, 56, in September 2013. After which, in both cases, she fed the bodies to her pigs

• Monica reportedly told investigators that (Delicino) had died by suicide, shooting himself in the head five times. She later admitted that there had been an argument between her and the victim, which led to a struggle. Monica then shot Delicino in the head, five times with a pistol and used a rifle, shooting him twice.

• Jordan Farris, a Jackson County Jail inmate testified on April 20 that Monica had confessed to her that (Monica) had used a shotgun on Haney and then fed him to pigs.  During Farris’ birthday, Monica allegedly gave her a birthday card, signed “Happy birthday from the sweetest murderer in Jackson County, Susan Monica.”

• At Monica’s ranch property, located at the 9100 block of West Evans Creek Rd., forensic techs, investigators and others spent more than 1,000 hours searching, with more than 135 holes dug throughout the property.

• During his testimony, Major Crimes Det. Eric Fox, from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) testified that he found a pile of dirty black trash bags. Checking them, Fox discovered human remains.

• Claiming her constitutional rights, Monica has been acting in her own defense, cross-examining investigators and sometimes even being argumentative. She’s also displayed a number of emotional outbursts.

• At one point, Monica reportedly maintained that Haney had been attacked by the pigs and she shot him, claiming mercy-killing.

• The murders’ details have been described as “grisly and gory,” had a visible impact on victim’s families.

• Monica, in interviews with investigators, spoke of joking about feeding people to her pigs. “The joke had become a reality,” she said. Monica also spoke of having mental issues or “the stupid thing in my brain.”

• Witnesses haven’t appeared. On April 20, four prosecution witnesses didn’t appear and Judge Tim Barnack eventually shutdown Monday’s proceedings.

• JCSO Det. Eric Henderson presented a pair of shotguns Monica had reportedly pawned a few days before her arrest. It hadn’t been determined if either weapon was used on Haney.

• Haney’s son, Jesse, told the court that after two months of not hearing from his father, he went to Monica’s property. He had a feeling that something was wrong. “He left behind everything he owned,” he said. “His motorcycle and pickup. His tools. His favorite leather jacket. It just didn’t make any sense. I knew something was wrong.”

Ironically, Monica was the victim of identity theft herself. She was upset about an apparent break-in on her property. Herbert reported Monica’s credit cards and other information had been stolen recently. The JCSO was notified and investigated the case. An arrest was later made.

She was sentenced to 50 years for those crimes and is currently at the Coffee Creek correctional facility near Wilsonville. Given her age, it's likely she will die behind bars.

Almost a year ago, Monica started fighting her conviction. Smith confirmed that Monica had filed for a post-trial conviction motion. “I know that she had a hearing on Aug. 20,” he said. “Another one is scheduled for Sept. 20. I’m not surprised that she’s doing this. It happens often and is one of those last ditch efforts some will try.”

He added that the DA’s Office isn’t involved. "That's the state's Dept. of Justice office, not us. Not our problem."

Law enforcement officers never found more bodies at Monica's ranch. Investigators did look into missing persons cases recorded throughout Jackson County, just in case Monica could have been connected.

"We didn't find anything," a JCSO source said. "We did think about checking Josephine County's cases but the JoCo sheriff's office wasn't able to help us at the time. So, yeah, it's possible more cases are out there."

A friend of Monica's now owns the property. Her legal maneuvers have stalled out. Surprisingly, her life story hasn't popped up as a Lifetime made for TV movie or a docuseries similar to Tiger King. Barring a stroke of luck or a death bed confession from Monica, it's hard to know if any JoCo unsolved missing persons will ever be linked to her.

In time, she might become a local urban legend. Some still believe the rumors and think the cops overlooked some dead bodies on the ranch property. Some think the ghosts of her victims roam the property as well.

Yes, she's known as the Pig Farm Killer on the Internet.

On Aug. 26, 2022, the property was listed for sale with an initial price of  $475,000.

For now, the White Queen is in prison and will be there for the rest of her life. Life in Wimer goes on, ever the chaotic soap opera played out via social media.

So it goes.

Until another bizarre homicide happens . . . .

Gold Hill City Council Dodges A Bullet

 Deb West's Bid For Interim Mayor Shutdown

GOLD HILL, Ore. -- Mayor pro tem Brad Studebaker and the city council addressed a few "housekeeping issues" during their Aug. 3 meeting, city manager/recorder Jessica Simpson said.

As with the previous meetings held since the Covid-19 pandemic started earlier this year, the meeting was webcast via the city's YouTube channel. Councilors Janet Wilson, Melia Biedscheid, Bill Rigney and Danielle Hinkley were present at the meeting -- councilor Ron Palmer wasn't present but Wilson had his proxy votes.

The matter of the municipal court came up. For nearly two years, Gold Hill residents have wanted the municipal court brought back. When Harry Staven was city manager, he reportedly made the court and looking for a judge a priority.

After Staven's departure -- it turned out he had a long history of being fired after allegations of misconduct and aggressive behavior aimed at city employees -- Simpson stepped up and finally found a judge: Local attorney Jennifer Zammetti was sworn in a few weeks ago. The city's new accounting software, Simpson said, would help the court with assessing fines and the like.

However, there was a snag, she said.

"Our municipal code book is very out of date," Simpson said. "People want the court to enforce numerous violations and levy fines. Well, as it's written now, our codes won't allow that. When someone started this process, they didn't do the proper research. This should have been taken care in the beginning."

Studebaker asked if they had any options.

"I think I can speak with (Zammetti) and we can start updating the codes," Simpson said. "I think we should keep the court in place and once we have the code book updated, we'll be good to go."

Several weeks ago, Pete Newport stepped down as mayor, and Studebaker has stepped in as mayor pro tem. A notice did go out for citizens to apply as interim mayor -- and only one person applied.

Deb West.

Over the years, West has served on a number of committees and on the city council. She was a councilor until last year after she stepped down due to family issues. Her history with Gold Hill's politics is interesting, to say the least.

During the Monday meeting, West addressed Studebaker and the councilors, making her pitch to be the interim mayor. She listed her past experiences as a councilor and committee member, as well as answering questions from the councilors. Wilson was concerned about West's conduct in the past.

"She's left in the middle of meetings and been absent without notice a few times," she said. "I have to wonder about her commitment to the city."

West explained that due to family medical issues, that was why she was absent or under emotional duress. However, that was now different.

Studebaker was more direct.

"My concern is that (West) shows up here and wants this chair. She doesn't know what's going on and not up to speed on things," he said. "We can't afford that. We've got too much going on at the moment. I think that we can manage from here on."

Hinkley said she was concerned about no one filling Studebaker's chair with him being interim mayor.

"People voted you to represent them," she said. "With you not there. they don't have a voice."

Both Simpson and Studebaker said the seat can be filled.

"We've done it before and it's not a problem," Simpson said.

Biedscheid asked if Studebaker wanted to remain interim mayor until a new one is sworn in January 2021.

"Yes," he said.

Biedscheid made the motion to keep Studebaker as interim mayor and Rigney seconded it. She and Hinkley voted "no" while Rigney, Wilson and Palmer -- by proxy -- voted "yes."

An anonymous source said the city "dodged a bullet."

"West was a very nice person when she first moved here years ago," they said. "That all changed after she started working with them."

Them. That's what some in Gold Hill call the "unholy trio" of Christine Alford, Donna Silva and Chris Stanley. Alford has appeared in council chambers and verbally assaulted anyone who opposed her. She runs a Facebook group, where she makes more libelous comments and even outright lies, some Gold Hill citizens say.

When Rick Hohnbaum was city manager a few years ago, Stanley and Silva served on the council. They both used their private emails rather than official councilor email accounts -- they felt Hohnbaum might spy on them.

Which was interesting, since both Stanley and Silva made an effort of tracking Hohnbaum's movements and where he had lunch. They also accused him of holding unauthorized meetings.

In late 2014, West and former city recorder Mary Goddard accused Hohnbaum of harassment and inappropriate behavior.  During the investigation, Resource Assistance for Rural Environments (RARE) Community Development Coordinator Molly Bradley was asked several questions. Her answers went directly against the narrative that  Alford pushed for on social media. Irate, Alford went on her group's page and called Bradley "a rat" and made other negative comments about her.

"And, what did Deb and those others do? Nothing. Not a goddamned fucking thing," the source said. "Christine got really nasty and said some terrible things about Molly. Deb never called her out. No one did."

The source said they were glad about the council's vote.

"Gold Hill is on track, for the first time in years," the source said. "(Stanley) ran the city into the ground and we're recovering from that. We don't need Deb in City Hall. I think she's too much of a hypocrite: Look at how she treated Mike Bollweg (Bollweg's company, Southern Oregon Water Technology, oversees the city's water treatment plant). That plant was a fucking mess because of council mismanagement and ignoring gross incompetence from the employees at the time.

"Hohnbaum did the right thing by bringing in Mike. He's done a great job there. But, Deb has it out for him. You can hear that condescending tone in her voice whenever she talks to him. Deb -- along with Alford, Stanley and Silva -- have an agenda: They don't want the city to get better, they want to keep it down in the dumps and are opposed to any change. We don't need that now."

The source went even further.

"They do have a ally on the council. We know who it is. That mole, that's what I call them, is working with those four, they're just as nasty and condescending as the others. The city, again, is on the right track. Deb, this ally of theirs -- they will undo all that good work."

Gold Hill does have a long, sordid history of bad politics. Some will point the finger at Alford, Stanley, Silva and even West as the source of the problem.

Maybe they're right.

In the meantime, Simpson has proven herself to be more than capable of running the city -- and the council is doing its best to make their community a better place.

Gold Hill, after all this time, is finally on the right track.

Correction: Councilor Janet Wilson made the motion regarding Studebaker. The YouTube feed was buffering at the time, hence the confusion.

Rogue River Bar Loses License

ROGUE RIVER, Ore. -- The Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) suspended the liquor license for a Rogue River bar because of alleged violations of state social distancing and face covering requirements.

According to the OLCC, on Aug. 1, Medford regional office investigators were called to the Jammin' Salmon, located at 6401 Rogue River Hwy. The agency said they were responding to calls from both the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and  Rogue River Police Dept. Law enforcement officers were there to investigate a "large event," JCSO public information officer Mike Moran said.

"On Saturday, at 9:09 p.m., the  JCSO was requested to check on a problem with multiple vehicles parked on Savage Creek near Hwy 99 obstructing the flow of traffic," Moran said. "We also were told that people were walking in the roadway and were believed to be customers of Jammin’ Salmon. A caller indicated a live band at the bar resulted in a crowd overflowing outside. One estimate was 200 people. Reportedly, some patrons took drinks outside the bar service area."

According to a press release, both the JCSO deputies and Rogue River PD officers told patrons to move vehicles and clear the roadway. OLCC conducted their investigation regarding the violations they cited the bar operator for.

The OLCC statement reported that an inspector reported the Jammin' Salmon was "packed with patrons, many spilling out of the bar and carrying away alcohol beverages as they left."

The bar’s inside service areas and outside patios were crowded with several hundred people, with only about 10 percent of them wearing any face coverings, the OLCC said.

The bar owner has been cited for two violations: One for the Oregon Health Authority's current face covering guidance and a second for Phase II reopening rules that require enforced social distancing at bars and restaurants. A video recently posted to the bar's Facebook page showed patrons disregarding social distancing and very few masks were present.

The OLCC investigation is currently ongoing and the agency said that the licensee, listed as Savage Creek Pub and Grub LLC and Stephen Boyd, could face more charges.

The OLCC said (Boyd) could exercise his administrative hearing rights to challenge the recent actions.

"The business may continue to serve food for takeout or delivery, but is not allowed to sell any alcoholic beverages. This includes any sales of beer, cider or wine for off-premises consumption.," the OLCC said.

Since early July, a number of bars and restaurants have been under extra scrutiny as state officials began working to enforce COVID-19 restrictions that have been tightened.

A number of area residents took to social media. Some, like Brian Campbell, claimed there was no pandemic and everything was a hoax. Sue Zonca and others accused the media and even law enforcement of exaggerating the claims. Gov. Kate Brown was the usual target of being a dictator, since some feel the state's COVID-19 restrictions are a threat to their freedoms.

Some even used the racist slur, "China Virus." Not surprising, since the Rogue River community has a history of racism: Local bar owner Joe McPherson has posted similar slurs on social media and some VFW members have publicly said disparaging comments about Colin Kaepernick.

Then came accusations of the pandemic being a Democratic hoax to disrupt the upcoming presidential elections. All that was missing were claims of United Nations troops cruising across Rogue River's Depot Street Bridge or black helicopters and chemtrails.

Or Bill Gates' nefarious plan to inject people with microchips.

Send In The Clowns

Famed silent movie actor Lon Chaney, Sr. – “The Man with a Thousand Faces” – once said, “There's nothing funny about a clown in the moonlight.”

Clowns. Remember them? They used to be the social media viral sensation before murder hornets and those "mysterious seeds" from China.

Four years ago this August, the killer clowns made their presence known. It all started in Wisconsin.

Green Bay, to be precise. Five pictures of a creepy clown roaming a vacant parking lot under a bridge in downtown Green Bay at night started going viral on Aug. 1. A Facebook page was created shortly after claiming the clown was named "Gags." The story went national, from Fox News to CNN. Suspicions of the character being related to a horror film were confirmed when a Wisconsin filmmaker announced the pictures were a marketing stunt for a then unreleased short film titled "Gags." A feature film was produced based on the short film and premiered in 2018 with a wide release planned for September 2019. It wasn't well received -- in fact, the website Dread Central said "Gags needs more gags."

After the Wisconsin incident, numerous other incidents started popping up across the country. In August, kids reported “creepy looking” clowns sighted in Greenville, South Carolina. By September, clowns were reportedly seen in Oregon. In early October 2016, further incidents were reported in Canada and the first occurrences in the United Kingdom and Australia. British communities were described as "horrified" and pressure had been placed on police resources.

Clown sightings were reported in Medford, Grants Pass, Merlin, Bend and Portland. In the Rogue Valley, someone posing as a clown was arrested by police. According to the Central Point Police Dept., Michael Richard, 21, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and second-degree trespassing after police received reports that there were pictures of a clown holding a sign "We are Here" at Crater High School, North Medford High School, South Medford High School and Eagle Point High School. The CPPD received a number of tips about the clown’s identity, including a family member of Richard’s who identified him.

The CPPD increased security at area schools and several law enforcement agencies issued advisories on the potential problems if someone dressed as a clown in order to scare people.

While both news networks and social media have been ablaze with clown sightings and hoaxes, the phenomenon is not new.

According to media reports, the first creepy clown sightings were reported in early summer 1981 when reports came from Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Missouri and a few other states. Clown sightings were also reported in 1988, 1991, 1994, 1997 and 2008.

One possible precursor event was the 2013 sightings of a "creepy clown" in Northampton, England. The Northampton clown sightings, which were in the town during September and October 2013, were the work of three local filmmakers Alex Powell, Elliot Simpson, and Luke Ubanski. The clown shared similar looks to Pennywise the Dancing Clown from Stephen King's book It. The trio started a Facebook page for the so-called "Northampton clown" and were using the appearances to drive traffic to the page.

In March 2014, Matteo Moroni from Perugia, Italy, owner of the YouTube channel DM Pranks, began dressing up as an evil clown and terrifying unsuspecting passersby, with his videos racking up hundreds of millions of views. A rash of sightings appeared in California in October 2014, which centered around the "Wasco clown", and primarily occurred in the Wasco, Calif., area with photos appearing on social media.

A person in clown attire was spotted in a cemetery in Chicago, in July 2015. This occurrence involved two residents who spotted the "creepy clown" scaling the gate at the Rosehill Cemetery late at night. After the clown entered the cemetery, they turned to face the residents and began waving slowly as they made a video recording. After waving for a few seconds, the clown ran into a dark wooded area and was not seen again. Police investigation of the sighting did not lead to any arrests.

“It does seem to happen in cycles,” said Heather Wade, then host of the late night radio talk show, Midnight in the Desert, a program dedicated to conspiracy theories, the paranormal and “not-so-ordinary” news events. The program started in July 2015, with Art Bell as host and Wade took over in December that year. She now hosts The Kingdom of Nye show, focusing on similar subject matter.

“It seems that this wave of sightings have really been inundating social media with hoaxes and rumors,” Wade said. “Contrary to some reports, no one dressed as a clown has been shot or killed. I think a majority of these sightings is copycats – you know, people with way too much time on their hands and thinking it’ll be good for a scare or a laugh. Now, Target and some other stores are refusing to sell clown masks and costumes. It’s getting out of hand.”

Wade thinks she knows how this current wave of clown sightings started.

“A few weeks ago, I was contacted by someone claiming to be working on the remake of It,” she said. Based on the 1986 Stephen King novel, the original 1990 miniseries featured an evil clown named Pennywise. “According to this source, some of these earlier clown sightings started as a viral marketing campaign for the new movie – which makes sense, as these clowns were seen holding red balloons, like Pennywise did in the novel.”

However, Wade feels that copycats seized upon the clown sightings and took it up to another level.

“I think that’s all it is,” she said. “I think people should be careful.  I’ve heard stories of kids being scared and not wanting to go out on Halloween – I hope things settle down by then. I feel that the police and parents both will be cautious this Halloween. I hate to think that kids will have their fun spoiled by something like this.”

In the end, Wade believed that the clown sightings of 2016 would become urban legends, joining similar bewildering incidents that have happened over the years.

Which brings us full circle to murder hornets, prehistoric microbes and mysterious seeds.

City of Phoenix Wants Lawsuit Gone

PHOENIX, Ore. -- Phoenix and its police department are seeking to dismiss a potentially embarrassing lawsuit.

Two years ago, former actor and Mouseketeer Dennis Day disappeared without a trace shortly after his husband, Ernie Caswell, was placed under medical care. Lt. Jeff Price, Phoenix Police Dept., conducted a search of the residence and reported no evidence of a crime. According the Oregon State Police, Phoenix PD conducted two more searches -- the last on Aug. 8, 2018, after reports of a bad smell coming from the residence were made.

Nothing was found.

In April 2019, using a cadaver dog, Phoenix officers found a badly decomposed body inside the residence. The Jackson County Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit was activated and OSP became the lead investigating agency. The OSP reported that a medical examiner identified the body as Day.

Daniel Burda, a handyman who lived with Day and Caswell, was arrested on July 5, 2019. He was charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, abuse of a corpse and identity theft. He was found unfiot for trial due to alleged mental disorders and transferred to a state hospital. He was released from jail in early July, fitted with a GPS tracker and given orders staying away from Day's house. His next court appearance is set for Dec. 7.

Meantime, Day's family have taken legal action against the city, the PPD and Price himself. They claim (Price) “acted with negligence and bad faith in conducting an investigation into the disappearance of Dennis Day.”

The claim states in part, “… due to the City of Phoenix Police Department and Lieutenant Jeff Price’s negligence, neglect, and failure to conduct an investigation at even a minimum professional standard, Mr. Day’s body was found in April, 2019 and not identified until June, 2019. Worse, Lieutenant Jeff Price made statements that certain investigative tools were used in the Summer of 2018, such as cadaver sniffing dogs, which were knowingly false and further delayed the investigation. As a result, Dennis Day’s family members suffer irreparable harm in the form of emotional distress and mental anguish, invasion of privacy, and costs associated with their attempts to solve the case themselves and seek the help they ultimately needed in doing so.”

Phoenix's attorneys are seeking to dismiss the lawsuit, claiming -- among other reasons -- that they did nothing to impede any investigation conducted by the family. During the nine months that Phoenix officers did nothing, the family could have used that time to investigate things themselves.

According to court records, the Day family will dispute the city's motion to dismiss on Aug. 10.

Local Neo-Nazi Appears At Sweet Home Rally

SWEET HOME, Ore. -- Infamous local neo-Nazi Keith Michael Erickson -- also known as "Biome Michael" -- took part in a so-called "Liberty Rally" on July 17.

Erickson told The New Era reporters -- Sweet Home's newspaper -- that he had learned of the rally via Telegram, a social media app that right wing extremists frequently use. He reached out to the event organizer, Jimy White. White and Erickson posed for a picture of them hold a Black Lives Matter banner. 

White posted it on his Twitter account.

According to The New Era article, Erickson said "'white America was better' and talked about wanting white people to only associate with other white people. While giving a speech on a bullhorn, Erickson said 'racism is anything the left doesn't agree with.'"

Erickson then reportedly shadowed a local journalist during the rally -- he allegedly asked about their ethnic heritage and if they the reporter were an FBI agent. During the rally, Erickson said those who wore masks were "subhuman."

On his social media accounts, Erickson describes himself as "White (Aryan) Male American National Socialist / Historical Revisionist." He is a Holocaust denier and a 9/11 conspiracy theorist. In December 2018, Erickson and Gregg Marchese, another white supremacist, were barred from entering Havurah Shir Hadash, an Ashland synagogue, where a packed audience turned out to hear a presentation about anti-Semitism in the U.S. and around the world. According to local media reports, Marchese recently posted on Facebook that the KKK was created to protect Southerners from "powerful Jews who had Lincoln killed (and) roaming gangs of recently freed slaves inflicting murder, rape and vandalism on whites."

In January 2019, Erickson and Marchese appeared at a Medford anti-hate crime event featuring Oregon's Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum.

“I don’t feel safe myself,” Erickson. “And, I’m confused why Jewish people don’t like me. I have nothing against them. I just follow the truth and know the real history of the Holocaust. I want to be safe,” he said. “If I want to say that white pride is good, I should feel safe doing that.”

Over the past year, Erickson started attending events held at the Williams Grange in Josephine County. It didn't go well.

The Grange has been asked multiple times by various people in the community, including some who volunteer and work at the breakfast, to not allow Biome to participate in the Pancake Breakfast, but the Grange continues to refuse this request. Therefore, some community members are calling for a boycott and pulling of support for The Williams Grange until Biome is told not to attend events held there, especially events that others attending feel uncomfortable with his presence due to his hate-filled racist platform and active promotion of these goals.

Biome’s activities include not only online organizing and promotion of his self-described American National Socialism, but he also publicly rallies with white-supremacists and has repeatedly disrupted gatherings at Synagogues and organized events focused on the Holocaust, Hate, and Racism. His Facebook has been slower recently, but it demonstrates a clear picture of the devolution of his attitudes over the past several years. Lately, he has been very active on Twitter. Just a quick search of recent tweets by Biome Michael Erickson (@biomemichael) reveal his active role in the proliferation of ethnic hatred and a fascist agenda. Some of the tweets on their own don’t have the full impact as they do in the context of the overall picture.

So What Now?

There is no doubt that Biome Michael Erickson is a neo-Nazi activist. Not just a sick person alone in his head, Biome works to manifest these sick ideas and conspire with others to broaden their appeal. He envisions a populist movement, or at least a vanguardist push, to implement his ideas, and he continually works toward the goal of forming a new American National Socialist (neo-Nazi) movement and regime. So, as folks who do not wish to squash individuality and free thought, yet cannot let this racist intolerance and potential ethnically-driven violence go unchallenged, how to proceed from here? After a year of Biome’s ongoing activity in Williams (and much longer in the general region), it is up to each individual to act according to their own conscience and feelings, BUT, inactivity feels like complicity. At a minimum, many feel that Biome should not be allowed to participate in or attend community events, as he uses these events as recruitment pools for his twisted cause and creates triggering and traumatic situations for others. 

Again, some community members are calling for a boycott and pulling of support for The Williams Grange until Biome is told not to come to events held there, especially events that others attending feel uncomfortable with his presence due to his hate-filled racist platform and active promotion of these goals. While we should clearly embrace a broadly diverse range of perspectives, even some that challenge each of us and make us uncomfortable, BUT, those like Biome’s, those clearly derived from hate, twisted bias, misinformation, and prejudice, and those whose ultimate goal is racist violence, is unacceptable, especially in a community which prides itself on its loving, diverse, peaceful, and compassionate perspectives. Enough is enough. There is no room for Nazis in Williams. It should seem almost instinctual to tell a self-proclaimed and active neo-Nazi that they are not welcome in our community and at our events, but it often seems like many people spend more time coming up with reasons why we shouldn’t say or do something. That is a sad state of human relations, one which is a part of the general crisis we are all in. Please contact the Williams Grange (and other venues) and ask them to not allow those who promote ethnic, racist, sexist, or any other biased-based hate at their events. Pleas share this post.

Sources claim Erickson has had some resistance from those attending Grange events. Other than that, Ashland residents have taken a few steps at pushing back against Erickson. Some attending the Sweet Home rally weren't happy about Erickson's presence or White's racist views. Since early June, many across the Rogue Valley have been taking a stand against those like Erickson, Marchese and White -- joining others across the United States.

Once people like Erickson and his fellow extremists are exposed -- one can only hope others will push back against them as well.

On July 31, 2020, Grants Department of Public Safety responded to Three Rivers Medical Center for a female that had been shot. The victim was identified as Julie Names (43) from Josephine County.  Hospital staff made every effort to revive the victim but were unsuccessful and she was pronounced deceased.

The Oregon State Police Major Crime Team was called and responded to the hospital.  The man, who drove the victim to the hospital, was detained and interviewed as a potential suspect.  The suspect, Travis Albins (41) of Josephine County, was arrested today and charged with Unlawful use of a Weapon and Manslaughter I.

Worthington Fire now at 800 acres

MEDFORD, Ore. – Crews from the Oregon Department of Forestry, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Jackson County Fire District #3 (structural protection) and Jackson County Sheriff’s Department are continuing aggressive initial attack on the Worthington Fire. The fire is currently at 800 acres and no sign of containment, as of July 31.

The initial and extended attack teams have been extraordinary in the aggressive efforts to contain this fire. Thanks to cooler weather and higher humidity last night, crews were able to make substantial process creating fire line, and as of 06:00, have dozer lines around 90% of the fire.

The plan for the day is to continue a robust ground and aviation campaign. Weather forecast is mid to upper 90’s, relative humidity 18 with a Haines index of 5. We are expecting some winds later this afternoon with the passage of a dry cold front.

Resources on the fire include 250 personnel, six dozers, eight 20-person hand crews, three water tenders, seven helicopters and one air tanker. Additional air and ground resources will be called in if needed.

David Duke's been banned from Twitter.

According to the social media platform, the one-time KKK grand wizard, neo-Nazi, Trump supporter and all-around piece of white trash has finally been bounced for violating policies on hateful conduct. Last month, Duke was banned from YouTube and was banned from Facebook in 2018. Twitter's action no doubt caught Duke's more than 53,000 followers off guard.
